That Moment When You Know And Exercise Your Rights
Original Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GI9S6H-ilww&list=WL&index=27&t=14s On Friday March 17th, at approximately 4:43pm. A young African American male was sitting at a red light as he was headed home from work. As this young man was sitting at the red light, Fairfax County Police Departments Detective Bush, badge #4077 of the Reston District Station, proceeded to turn on the same street as the young man. As the detective passed by the young man, the two made eye contact and the detective made an immediate U-Turn in the middle of the street and pulled up behind the young man. As they are sitting at the light, the detective runs the young mans license plates. As the light turns green the detective does not pull the young man over for a traffic stop but instead follows him through the light, onto the next street over, into the young mans neighborhood, until he gets to his apartment. At this point the young man is very fearful because he knows he has not done anything wrong but yet is being followed all the way to his apartment for an unknown reason, so for his protection he takes out his phone and begins recording. The detective could not tell the young man why he followed him and why he believed he did not live there so one can only assume that this is a result of racial profiling, as is the case with a very similar situation where an Officer by the name of Smyly also harassed a young African American male by the name of Zayd Atkinson who was picking up trash outside of his residence. The veteran officer of 14 years in this case, resigned. To Fairfax County Police Department, please train your officers to not racially profile minorities who are just going home from work, it is unacceptable. As of September 2018. Fairfax County Police Department was made up of 82% WHITE officers and only 7% Black Officers. The motto for the Reston Station is “Engaging our community to Enhance a Solid Foundation of Trust” - this certainly does not deem true thanks to the harassment by the detective as this young man and many others have lost a lot of trust in the Fairfax County Police Department.
